The New Yorker Hotel

Bold, towering and unmistakably New York, The New Yorker Hotel is one of Manhattan’s great Art Deco landmarks.

Opening in 1930 in Manhattan’s Garment District, the hotel arrived during an extraordinary period of New York architecture, when buildings weren't just getting taller. They were becoming statements.

With its distinctive stepped silhouette, alternating vertical bands of warm grey brick and windows, and famous rooftop NEW YORKER sign, the building has remained an instantly recognizable part of the Manhattan skyline for generations.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted The New Yorker to feel big. Really big.

Rather than pulling back and neatly fitting the entire building into the composition, I chose a dramatic perspective that pushes the hotel right to the edges of the artwork.

In fact, the frame can't quite contain it.

That was intentional.

The extreme angle exaggerates the height and strong vertical lines of the architecture, drawing your eye upward toward the famous rooftop sign. The deep-cut light courts, rows of windows and repeating geometric forms reinforce the massive scale of the structure.

It’s the kind of architecture I love illustrating because the building already has so much personality before I even start exaggerating it.

There’s also something wonderfully New York about it. In a city overflowing with extraordinary architecture, a building still has to work pretty hard to stand out.

The New Yorker does.

This illustration is my tribute to an Art Deco giant from an era when Manhattan seemed determined to build its way into the sky.

Each limited edition is printed on premium 300–320 gsm fine art paper, made from acid-free, 100% cotton rag with a beautiful matte finish.
