Historic railway architecture, an unmistakable green bottle and one of Toronto’s most recognizable breweries.

Steam Whistle Brewing calls the historic John Street Roundhouse home, a former Canadian Pacific Railway facility located in the heart of downtown Toronto. Once used to service and repair locomotives, the Roundhouse has found a completely different second life while retaining the industrial character that makes the building so distinctive.

Surrounded today by some of Toronto’s biggest attractions and landmarks, it remains a wonderful piece of the city’s railway past.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to capture Steam Whistle and the Roundhouse from a perspective that celebrates both the brewery and the history of the building it occupies.

The curved architecture of the former railway facility creates an interesting composition on its own, while familiar details such as the historic water tower help tell the story of what this site once was.

That combination is what makes the location so interesting to me.

Old railway history. New Toronto. And a cold pilsner in the middle of it all.

Rather than tearing down the past and starting again, the Roundhouse was given another life. Steam Whistle turned an old piece of industrial infrastructure into a destination while keeping much of the character that made the building worth preserving in the first place.

It also happens to be a perfect subject for a vintage travel poster: distinctive architecture, Toronto history and one seriously recognizable beer brand.

This illustration is my tribute to a place where Toronto’s railway past and brewing present share the same roof.
