National Steel Car

In a part of Hamilton better known for factories, rail yards and heavy industry, there’s an unexpected piece of architectural beauty hiding in plain sight.

National Steel Car has been manufacturing railway freight cars in Hamilton for more than a century, making it part of the city’s long industrial and railway history.

But it was a much newer addition to the property that caught my attention.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to showcase the distinctive Art Deco-inspired gatehouse at National Steel Car.

Surrounded by the sprawling industrial landscape of factories, railway infrastructure and manufacturing facilities, the gatehouse feels almost unexpected.

Its strong symmetry, geometric forms and architectural detailing call back to the streamlined Art Deco and Art Moderne architecture of the 1930s, an era when even functional buildings could be designed with a remarkable amount of style.

That contrast immediately appealed to me.

Industry meets elegance. Function meets design.

Hamilton has a reputation for its gritty industrial landscape, but tucked throughout that landscape are fascinating buildings and details that can easily go unnoticed.

This is one of them.

I wanted the composition to give the gatehouse the attention it deserves, transforming something you might normally glimpse from the road into the centrepiece of the illustration.

It may be a relatively recent addition to a company with more than a century of history, but its architecture feels like it belongs to another era entirely.
