Today, old architecture stands alongside new restaurants, independent businesses, galleries and studios, while the area's popular art crawls regularly bring the street to life.

About the Artwork

This vintage-inspired illustration celebrates the character of James Street North and the beautifully weathered buildings that have stood proudly along the street through generations of change.

Rather than polishing away the neighbourhood's rough edges, I wanted to make them part of the appeal. The old storefronts, architecture and streetscape give James North an identity that feels unmistakably Hamilton.

Flying overhead is another piece of the city's history: the Avro Lancaster bomber, a nod to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton and its famous Lancaster, one of the museum's most celebrated aircraft.

Together, the streetscape and Lancaster create a tribute to a city that embraces its history while continuing to reinvent itself.
