Glowing lights, Art Deco details and the unmistakable charm of a classic neighbourhood theatre.

The Zoetic Theatre has been part of Hamilton’s entertainment landscape in one form or another since the early 20th century. Over the years, the building has changed names and evolved with the neighbourhood around it, but much of the character that makes an old theatre special has survived.

Today, The Zoetic continues that tradition as a local entertainment venue and a wonderfully nostalgic reminder of a very different era of going to the movies.

About the Artwork

Some buildings are interesting because of their size or architectural importance.

The Zoetic is interesting because it has personality.

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to capture that moment when you arrive outside an old theatre and the building itself starts setting the mood before you've even walked through the doors.

The Art Deco-inspired entrance, marquee and rows of glowing bulbs give the exterior a wonderful sense of occasion. Step inside and that character continues with vintage wallpaper, retro furnishings and the quirky details you simply don't find in a modern multiplex.

That’s what attracted me to the building in the first place.

There’s something special about a theatre where the experience begins before the movie does.

Places like The Zoetic are increasingly rare. They're not anonymous boxes containing movie screens. They have history, imperfections, personality and stories embedded in their walls.

This illustration is my tribute to a Hamilton theatre that continues to keep a little bit of that old movie-going magic alive.
