Jacques Cartier Bridge

Rising high above the St. Lawrence River, the Jacques Cartier Bridge has become an unmistakable part of Montreal’s skyline.

Connecting Montreal Island with the South Shore, the massive steel bridge stretches across one of Canada’s most important waterways. Its distinctive structure, scale and location make it both an essential piece of the city and an impressive landmark in its own right.

For me, it was also the perfect subject for a Montreal illustration.

About the Artwork

I’ve always been fascinated by bridges.

Every bridge is designed in response to the place it needs to cross, giving each one its own structure, proportions and personality. When I started looking for an interesting way to represent Montreal, the Jacques Cartier Bridge immediately stood out.

Rather than focusing solely on Montreal’s architecture and skyline, I wanted this illustration to explore the relationship between the city, the bridge and the St. Lawrence River below.

The bridge towers over the composition while the water creates movement and activity beneath it. Boats and life along the river provide a sense of scale, while the massive steel structure connects the landscape on either side.

I’ve always enjoyed illustrating water because it adds another layer of movement and reflection to a scene. Pairing that with the strong geometric structure of the bridge created exactly the kind of contrast I was looking for.

This vintage-inspired illustration is my tribute to an iconic piece of Montreal and the mighty St. Lawrence that flows beneath it.
