Hamilton, Ontario – Steeltown

For generations, steel has been an unmistakable part of Hamilton's identity.

The city's growth was shaped by its powerful steel industry, earning Hamilton the nickname "Steeltown." The mills and smokestacks along the harbour became part of the city's skyline and, for better or worse, remain deeply connected to Hamilton's history, its people and its working-class roots.

It's a landscape that may not be conventionally beautiful, but it is unmistakably Hamilton.

About the Artwork

When creating this vintage-inspired illustration, I was drawn to the contrast between two very different sides of Hamilton.

Along the harbour, the massive steel mills, smokestacks and industrial structures rise from the shoreline. Surrounding them are the waters of Hamilton Harbour and the natural landscape of the bay.

Nature and industry. Beauty and grit.

That contrast is what makes this view of Hamilton so interesting to me. The factories aren't hidden away. They're part of the landscape and part of the city's identity, representing generations of people who built their lives around the steel industry.

Rather than trying to make Hamilton something it isn't, this piece celebrates the rugged industrial character that helped make the city what it is today.
