Gooderham Flatiron Building

Wedged dramatically between Front and Wellington Streets, the Gooderham Building is one of Toronto’s most distinctive architectural landmarks.

Completed in 1892, the narrow triangular building was designed to fit the unusual intersection created by the streets surrounding it. Its striking red-brick exterior, Romanesque detailing and unmistakable wedge-shaped profile have made it a favourite piece of Toronto architecture for generations.

More than 130 years later, it remains a beautiful reminder of an earlier Toronto, standing proudly as a completely different city has grown up around it.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to celebrate one of my favourite things about the Gooderham Building: the contrast between old and new Toronto.

From the right perspective, the historic red-brick building commands the foreground while the towers of the modern city rise behind it.

The Gooderham may be considerably smaller than its neighbours, but somehow it still manages to steal the show.

Its unusual triangular footprint creates wonderful angles to illustrate, while the warm red brick and ornate architectural details provide a striking contrast against the glass, concrete and steel of the surrounding skyline.

There’s something I love about buildings like this. Toronto has changed enormously since 1892, yet the Gooderham Building remains wedged into its little piece of the city, refusing to be overshadowed.
