Fairmont Royal York

Standing proudly in the heart of downtown Toronto, the Fairmont Royal York has been one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks for nearly a century.

The hotel first opened its doors in June 1929, directly across from Union Station. Built as one of Canada’s grand railway hotels, the Royal York was briefly the tallest building in Toronto when it was completed and quickly became a symbol of a growing, ambitious city.

Nearly a century later, Toronto’s skyline has changed dramatically, but the Royal York remains.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to capture the grandeur of the Royal York surrounded by the modern city that grew up around it.

Its distinctive Châteauesque architecture and Indiana limestone exterior stand in beautiful contrast to the glass, steel and towering structures that now dominate Toronto’s downtown skyline.

There’s something I love about seeing this grand old hotel seemingly floating in a sea of modern architecture. While the city around it has continually reinvented itself, the Royal York has managed to retain much of the character and elegance that made it special in the first place.

Step inside today and, despite generations of modernization, you can still find glimpses of that old-world glamour throughout the hotel.

This illustration celebrates one of Toronto’s grand dames, a building that has watched the city transform around it while remaining unmistakably itself.
