The Westdale Theatre

A neighbourhood landmark since 1935, The Westdale Theatre is a beautiful reminder of an era when going to the movies was an experience in itself.

Located in Hamilton’s Westdale Village, the 1930s Art Deco theatre has welcomed generations of moviegoers through its doors. While so many classic neighbourhood cinemas have disappeared over the years, The Westdale has survived, preserving an important piece of Hamilton’s architectural and cultural history.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to celebrate the character and craftsmanship of the classic neighbourhood movie theatre.

The design captures The Westdale’s distinctive brick façade, marquee and canopy, along with some of the architectural details that make the building so special, including its limestone carvings of the traditional comedy and tragedy masks and its unmistakable Art Deco tower.

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about theatres like this. Long before enormous multiplexes became the norm, the theatre itself was part of the experience. The glowing marquee, the architecture and the anticipation of seeing what was playing all contributed to the magic of a night at the movies.

This illustration is a tribute to The Westdale and the beautiful old theatres that have gradually disappeared from our neighbourhoods, replaced by something bigger, but not always something with quite as much character.

Thankfully, The Westdale is still here.

For collectors, a limited edition of just 15 signed and individually numbered prints is available in each size.

Each limited edition is printed on premium 300–320 gsm fine art paper, made from acid-free, 100% cotton rag with a beautiful matte finish.

Limited editions include a 2" white border and are personally signed and numbered.
