Weathering the Storm

A quiet winter landscape transformed by snow, light and a little experimentation.

What began as an opportunity to play with some custom illustration brushes gradually snowballed, quite literally, into this frozen world.

I’ve always loved winter landscapes. There’s something about the stillness, dramatic shapes and limited colours of winter that can make even the simplest landscape feel completely different.

But I didn’t want this one to feel entirely cold.

About the Artwork

This illustration started without much of a plan.

I began experimenting with custom brushes, creating textures and shapes, and slowly started building a composition around them. As more layers were added, the landscape began to take shape and I found the visual style along the way.

That sense of exploration became a big part of the finished piece.

I wanted the environment to feel cold, quiet and almost lifeless, but not bleak. So I introduced a contrasting source of warmth: sunlight breaking through the winter sky and spilling across the frozen landscape.

That little bit of light changes the mood of the entire scene.

Cold meets warmth. Stillness meets life.

What began as an experiment eventually became a place I wanted to step into: crisp air, untouched snow, long shadows and that fleeting moment when the winter sun breaks through and makes everything glow.

Sometimes the best destinations are the ones you discover along the way.
