McQuesten High Level Bridge

Spanning the landscape between Hamilton and Burlington, the Thomas B. McQuesten High Level Bridge has been a familiar part of the city’s western entrance since the 1930s.

With its distinctive limestone-faced pylons, sweeping roadway and views across Cootes Paradise and the Niagara Escarpment, the bridge combines monumental architecture with one of the area’s most beautiful natural landscapes.

For generations of people arriving in Hamilton, it has also provided one of those unmistakable signs that you’re almost home.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to show the McQuesten High Level Bridge from a perspective that gives its architecture the attention it deserves.

The composition draws your eye toward the bridge’s four signature limestone-faced pylons, allowing them to rise dramatically above the roadway while the surrounding Escarpment and Cootes Paradise stretch into the distance.

It’s another example of something I love illustrating: the contrast between structures created by people and the natural environments surrounding them.

The bridge cuts confidently through the landscape, yet somehow feels like it belongs there.

I added vintage automobiles to give the scene a sense of timelessness and to imagine the bridge closer to the era when it first became a Hamilton landmark. They help transform the illustration from a contemporary view into something that feels like it could have been pulled from an old Ontario travel poster.

Stone, steel, roadway and nature, all meeting in one unmistakably Hamilton view.

This illustration is my tribute to a beautiful piece of local architecture that generations have crossed, driven beneath and admired, even if they didn't always know its name.
