Hamilton, Ontario – The Ship

Tucked among the pubs and patios of Hamilton’s Augusta Street, The Ship is the kind of neighbourhood tavern that feels like it has always belonged exactly where it is.

Known for its burgers, seafood, craft beer and impressive selection of bourbon and whisky, The Ship has become a familiar gathering place along one of downtown Hamilton’s favourite stretches for grabbing a drink, meeting friends and spending an evening on a patio.

But it was the personality of the building itself that caught my attention.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to capture the quaint, slightly quirky charm that makes The Ship so inviting.

The warm burnt-orange brick immediately gives the building character, while the patio out front makes it feel like the kind of place you could wander into and accidentally spend the rest of your evening.

Then there’s that sign.

The wonderfully playful wooden SHIP sign standing out front feels almost like a piece of folk art and gives the tavern an identity before you ever walk through the door.

And, of course, there’s the ivy.

It crawls across the building, spills down the brick and stretches toward the sign, softening the architecture and making the whole place feel as though it has gradually grown into its surroundings.

Those little imperfections and details are exactly what I love illustrating.

Warm brick. Cold beer. A leafy patio. And one very big wooden ship.

This print is my tribute to a little piece of Augusta Street and the neighbourhood places that become memorable not because they're grand or famous, but because of the good times people have inside them.
