Queen’s Head Pub

A little piece of Burlington history and a pretty good place to enjoy a pint.

The building that is now home to the Queen’s Head Pub dates back to 1860, when it was built as the Zimmerman House. For decades, the building operated as a hotel and became a familiar part of Burlington’s growing downtown.

Today, its distinctive brick exterior, dormer windows and high-hipped roof make it stand out among the newer buildings surrounding it, a reminder of just how much Burlington has changed while pieces of its past remain.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to capture more than an interesting old building.

What I really like about the Queen’s Head is how comfortably the past and present coexist here.

The city has grown around it. Streets have become busier, buildings have become taller and downtown Burlington has continually changed, yet this quirky old structure still occupies its place in the middle of it all.

Architecturally, there’s plenty to love. Its three-storey brick façade, dormer windows, distinctive roofline and wonderfully unusual proportions give the building a personality all its own.

But buildings like this become important for reasons beyond architecture. They become places where people meet friends, grab dinner, celebrate, watch a game or settle in for a pint.

Over enough years, all of those ordinary moments become part of the history too.

This illustration celebrates a piece of Burlington’s past that remains very much part of its present.
