Bright, colourful and unmistakably East Coast, the homes of Jellybean Row have become one of the most recognizable sights in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Scattered throughout the city’s steep streets, these colourful row houses create a striking contrast against the cool greys, blues and misty skies of the North Atlantic.

One popular local story suggests that brightly coloured homes helped sailors returning from long stretches at sea spot their houses among the hills of St. John’s. Whether history or folklore, it’s a fitting story for a city whose identity has always been closely connected to the sea.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted the colour and personality of St. John’s to take centre stage.

The brightly painted homes cascade down the city’s sloping streets toward the harbour, creating the wonderfully irregular patchwork of colour that makes this part of St. John’s so distinctive.

In the distance, the harbour is alive with activity, providing a reminder of the city’s long relationship with the Atlantic and the generations of people who have made their lives along its shores.

It’s a celebration of the colour, history and rugged coastal character that make St. John’s unlike anywhere else in Canada.
