Hamilton, Ontario – Scottish Rite

Grand, imposing and a little unexpected, the Hamilton Scottish Rite is one of the city’s most distinctive historic buildings.

Originally constructed in 1895 as an elaborate private residence, the building was considered one of the finest homes of its kind at the time. Its architecture incorporated materials and craftsmanship from around the world, while its remarkable four-storey turret gave the residence an almost castle-like presence.

Inside, the grandeur continues with richly detailed woodwork, including oak, maple and cherry, along with ornate finishes and stained glass.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to emphasize the scale and almost storybook quality of the Scottish Rite building.

Rather than illustrating it from a traditional straight-on perspective, I chose an exaggerated low angle that makes the building feel even more imposing. Your eye is drawn upward past its grand entrances and intricate architectural details toward the towering turret above.

It’s a perspective that celebrates everything I find interesting about the building: the unusual silhouette, mixture of materials, elaborate details and sheer presence of the structure.

Hamilton is filled with architecture that can be easy to overlook when you pass it every day. The Scottish Rite is one of those buildings that rewards you for stopping and actually looking.

This illustration is my tribute to one of Hamilton’s most impressive architectural landmarks and a reminder to occasionally look up. Your eyeballs will thank you.
