Hamilton, Ontario – LIUNA Station

Grand staircases, towering columns and the kind of entrance that makes you stop and look up.

Opened in 1931 as the Canadian National Railway James Street Station, the building now known as LIUNA Station is one of Hamilton’s great architectural landmarks and a designated National Historic Site of Canada.

Built during the golden age of passenger rail travel, the station welcomed generations of travellers to Hamilton through an entrance designed to make an impression.

Today, the trains may be gone, but the grandeur remains.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to celebrate an era when important public buildings weren't simply designed to serve a purpose. They were designed to inspire.

LIUNA Station is a perfect example.

Its sprawling Neoclassical façade, enormous columns, symmetrical architecture and monumental staircase give the building a sense of scale that's difficult to ignore.

I wanted the composition to emphasize that feeling.

The perspective draws your eye toward the entrance and upward through the columns, recreating some of the experience of standing in front of the station and taking in its sheer size.

There’s something fascinating about architecture from this period. These buildings were constructed with a confidence and permanence that feels increasingly rare today.

This illustration is my tribute to Hamilton’s railway history and to a remarkable building that has found a new life without losing the character that made it special in the first place.
