Hamilton, Ontario – Gore Park

At the centre of downtown Hamilton sits a small stretch of green space that generations of Hamiltonians have walked through, gathered in and used as a familiar meeting place.

Gore Park has long been part of the rhythm of the city centre. Surrounded by downtown architecture, traffic, businesses and pedestrians, the park provides a little breathing room in the middle of it all.

And throughout its history, a handful of familiar landmarks have helped define the space.

About the Artwork

When I think of Gore Park, there are a few images that immediately come to mind.

First is the fountain, sitting prominently within the park and providing one of downtown Hamilton’s most recognizable views.

Then there are the historic monuments positioned throughout the space, including statues of Queen Victoria and Sir John A. Macdonald, which had stood as prominent features of the park.

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to bring those individual elements together and give them the attention they command when you're actually standing there.

Rather than treating the monuments as background details, they become the stars of the composition.

There’s something interesting about a public space like Gore Park. Buildings change, businesses come and go, streets are rebuilt and generations of people pass through, yet certain landmarks remain familiar reference points.

You might walk through on the way to work, meet someone there, stop for an event or simply pass by without giving it much thought.

But over enough years, those everyday views become part of how we remember a city.

A fountain. A few familiar monuments. And a little piece of Hamilton at the centre of everything.

This illustration is my tribute to Gore Park and the landmarks that have helped define the heart of downtown Hamilton.
