A little beach town, a lot of character and one seriously famous plate of perch.

Sitting on the north shore of Lake Erie, Port Dover has the kind of timeless charm that makes summer feel like it moves a little slower.

The beach is only steps from downtown, fishing boats are part of the landscape and generations of visitors have returned for sunny afternoons by the lake, walks through town and traditions that have become uniquely Port Dover.

Right in the middle of that experience is the Erie Beach Hotel.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to capture a place that feels perfectly suited to an old tourism poster.

Port Dover has a wonderfully nostalgic quality to it. You can wander through the downtown streets with the beach nearby, feel the lake breeze blowing through town and find reminders everywhere of the fishing industry that helped shape the community.

The Erie Beach Hotel felt like the perfect subject to represent that character.

A longtime local landmark, the hotel has become particularly famous for its Lake Erie perch dinners, turning a visit into something of a tradition for generations of families and visitors.

But Port Dover has another tradition that's considerably louder.

Whenever Friday the 13th rolls around, the character of the town changes completely as motorcycle enthusiasts arrive from near and far, filling the streets with bikes, people and an atmosphere that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

That combination is what makes Port Dover such a fun place to illustrate.

Beach town. Fishing town. Motorcycle town. And somehow it all works.

This print is my tribute to the Erie Beach Hotel and a little Ontario town that has managed to hold onto its character while giving people plenty of reasons to keep coming back.
