Hamilton, Ontario – Dundurn Castle

Grand columns, sweeping grounds and nearly two centuries of Hamilton history.

Built in 1835, Dundurn Castle is one of Hamilton’s most recognizable historic landmarks. Despite its name, Dundurn isn't a castle in the traditional sense, but an impressive Neoclassical mansion whose scale and commanding location certainly give it a suitably grand presence.

Today, the beautifully preserved property offers a glimpse into life in 19th-century Hamilton and remains one of the city's architectural treasures.

About the Artwork

For this vintage-inspired illustration, I wanted to emphasize the feature that immediately grabs your attention when approaching Dundurn Castle: that incredible façade.

The massive columns dominate the front of the building, supporting an ornate balcony and creating an entrance that feels appropriately imposing for a house carrying the name “castle.”

I chose a composition that plays up that sense of scale and symmetry, allowing the architecture to command the scene.

But Dundurn is also interesting because there’s more to discover beyond the mansion itself. The surrounding grounds and unusual structures, including the distinctive Cockpit building, sometimes referred to as the aviary, add another layer of character and history to the property.

There’s something fascinating about walking through a place that has occupied the same piece of Hamilton for nearly two centuries while the city surrounding it has completely transformed.

This illustration is my tribute to one of the city's most impressive historic landmarks and to an era when apparently even a front porch needed to make a serious statement.
